USTA Fall Sectional trophy

Congratulations to the Team Tennis USA finalists at the USTA Fall Sectionals in Daytona Beach, December 12/13. They won their flight, semi-final, and went on to the final in probably the most competitive age division. This was an exceptional performance, especially for the team of 14 and 15 year olds in the Under 18s'. League members included Susie and Erin Bernet, Alesse Mason, Billy Earnhart, and Maxx Esteves.

USPTA sponsors Jr Team Tennis League

The United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) and Grassroots Tennis LLC (organizers of Team Tennis USA) have agreed on a sponsorship arrangement for the newly named USPTA Jr Team Tennis League (formerly Team Tennis USA). Our joint objective is to provide a quality and integrated league with a great competitive spirit across all age ranges. The USPTA JTT league is by far, the largest and most competitive league in Palm Beach County with team opportunities from the very youngest beginners all the way through to tournament level (see article on USTA Sectionals).

The USPTA is the oldest and largest professional tennis organization in the world, and with its 2,000+ members in Florida, we believe that with our focus on the league being run by the professionals, it provides the very best in tennis coaching for juniors. This sponsoring agreement will give an immediate greater visibility to the League, and increase the opportunity of our obtaining additional sponsors to benefit the juniors. One of the first objectives willl be obtaining sponsorships to assist in funding quality dry-fit shirts for all league members.

We have many exciting plans for the growth of junior team tennis, including the Jr Masters Series, a travel team league formed by the South Florida JTT Alliance. The latest match in this highly successful doubles series was held at the Boca Raton Swim & Racquet Center on February 7, where over 100 juniors competed for Jr Grand Prix points. The next Jr Masters will be held at the Midtown Athletic Club in Weston at a date t.b.a.

Winter League 2010

NEWS: The Grand Tennis Jamboree will be held on Saturday, March 20, at the Swim & Racquet Center of Boca Raton on St Andrews Blvd. Registration will commence at 12:00 noon.
The fun packed tennis festivities are FREE to all League members, and junior tennis player guests are welcome - a small fee of $15 will apply. Family members, including parents and siblings (non-playing) are free to watch.

The good news continues with the addition of an extra week to the League schedule. The original Jamboree date of March 13 will now be utilized for play-off matches (where necessary), with team pick-up games being arranged.

There is now the addition of a 10 & Under division to give these youngsters who can play full court, the opportunity of some serious match play against their peers. The two 12 & Under divisions (Standard & Intermediate) are thriving, as is the 14s'.
There is a new format to the 18 & Under division. Some 20 plus juniors, many of whom play on their high school team, compete in a Grand Prix format with individual match points being awarded on a weekly basis. All juniors in this division play as usual, on a Saturday, but all in one central location.

The popular Tencap ratings system, where players can follow their progress, includes a rating trend that indicates the direction, and by how much their new rating will be when it is re-set after 8 games. It also allows pros and parents to see how many computer points their team has, and how likely their team will be hoisting the champions trophies at season end.

Jr Masters Series

The 2010 Jr Master Invitational Series got under way with an excellent turnout in beautiful weather on Sunday, February 7 at the Swim & Racquet Center of Boca Raton. Over 100 juniors participated in near perfect conditions, all completed in time for parents to get home to watch the Super Bowl! Full results will be posted here shortly.

The 2009 Jr Masters Invitational series concluded with a highly successful tournament at Crandon Park, Key Biscayne. A number of the players even got to play on the same stadium court as many of their tennis heroes in the Sony Ericsson Masters. Team Tennis USA teams swept the 14s & Under division with Billy Earnhart & Eli Kaplan capturing the 14s Advanced title, and Sean Leeman & Cole Piscione, the 14s' Intermediate. JTT USA League members representing Palm Beach County were runners-up in both boys and girls 10s', and girls 12s'.
The first of these tournaments was hosted by Midtown Athletic Club in Weston, with some 120 players participating in the various divisions.

The format for the Invitational was doubles to give as many players as possibility, the chance of participating.

Future series tournaments will rotate between the member leagues of the South Florida JTT Alliance in Miami, Weston and Palm Beach County, with the next venue located at the Midtown Athletic Club in Weston.
The series is aimed at providing a high level of play for rookie and tournament level players in a one-day tournament. The emphasis is a highly competitive team format showcasing the best players in the tri-county area.

Tom's Corner
Welcome back to Tom's Corner. OK, this one is for all parents of tennis juniors, and involves the etiquette of actually watching a game. Not too difficult, many of you would say, but there again, reality is often different. In the course of many visits to matches, and feedback from parents, it seems that many parents do not separate their own competitive feelings when watching little junior play. I have lost track of the number of times I have heard parents (& have politely asked them to refrain) actually shouting at their child in the middle of a match. Sometimes this shout has been of the coaching variety, while other times it has been of a total negative put-down of the player. Either way it is not only against the rules of tennis, b...
